In the beginning of Jack...
In February 2012 we found out we were expecting a second child! We were shocked that it happened so quickly, but happy too. :) Reality quickly settled in and we realized the need to call Dr Velarde quickly. At the first appointment they did blood work and a US, but couldn't see anything. I left with the assurance that we were very early and not to worry. The next week I went back for another US and there was something small but not defined. Again left with assurances, you are very early come back next week. Finally at the third appointment we saw a defined sack and fetal pole! Thank you God for that blessing! :) That week I did the first of many 24 hour protine tests. The results came back at 81.
Fast forward a couple of uneventful months.
At 24 weeks I started to experience bouts of high BP's. We started to watch carefully. At 26/27 weeks we did another 24 hour protein and it came back 198. Under 200, so still in the OK range. At 27 weeks we also had an elective 4D US and it was really cool! We found out the baby has a head full of hair already! We also found out that the baby's estimated weight is already 2 lbs 12 oz! I can't even believe that! :)
Now here we sit at 28 weeks. Praying and hoping for a couple more days, weeks, months.... :) Here is to an October baby! Will update this page whenever something interesting happens! :)
Fast forward to 36 weeks....
On September 30 Dr Velarde called and left a message for me to call her first thing in the morning on
Monday. I knew it couldn't be good... I had just taken a 24 hour protine test
on that Friday/Saturday and knew she had the results.
I called on October 1st and she said that I had mild pre-eclampsia. My numbers had
jumped over 1 1/2 weeks from 290's to 525. :( The cut off for mild pre-e is
300. :( So Dr Velarde decided that we should deliver ASAP. According to her I
was 36 weeks and 1 day so she wanted to deliver the next Sunday/Monday. She
sent me to my perinatalagist on Tuesday and she said that I should deliver on
Friday. Just shy of 37 weeks. :( I went back to the peri on Thursday for
another NST/US to make sure things were ok. During all this time, I was
grappling with the fact that AGAIN I wouldn't make it full term. It hurt so
bad. :( I was (and still am) so upset with my body. On Friday morning Mom and
Bethy came to pick up Eli and Rick and I went to the hospital to check in. The
surgery (c-section) was supposed to take place between 10 and 11AM. Mom came to
the hospital to sit with me after taking Eli to the house. Then Bethy and Del
brought Eli back to see me before the surgery. It was so hard to say good bye
to him to go to surgery. He had no ide what was about to happen. Things were
running a little late so at 11AM they took me back. Rick waited outside while I
got the spinal. Then he came in and within 10 minutes Jack was out. He weighed
7 lbs 6 oz and had a head full of hair. While they closed me up, Rick and Jack
went to the nursery for observation because he was born at 36 and 5. He kept
his temp up and was able to ROOM IN with me! It was great! I tried
breastfeeding exclusively but by the end of our hospital stay he had lost weight
all the way down to 6 lbs 7 oz. :( We went home and had to supplement with
formula. I cried all the way home. :( The next morning we took Jack to the
pedi and he hadn't lost any more weight so it was good. That Friday (Jack was 1
week old) he had gained back just 2 oz. :( After much crying and sadness, I
decided to stop breastfeeding. As soon as we started to formula feed Jack
jumped in weight 9 oz in a week!
I have
struggled with PPD again this time, but Dr Velarde put me on Zoloft and it has
helped alot this time.
Now Jack is 1 month
old. He weighs 9 lbs and was diagnosed with reflux. But he is now on special
formula and meds to help with that. :)
That's
our story! And we are sticking to it! :)
